Transcript of a diary kept by Andrew Campbell in 1850, with details of his voyage to the United States and his visits with his brothers. He arrived in Jersey City on July 3, just in time to enjoy the Independence Day festivities in New York City. He soon boarded the train for Philadelphia, where he toured Independence Hall, the U.S. Mint, Eastern State Penitentiary, and the water works. He also visited several shops and took in the expansive view from the roof of Girard College. He then traveled to Washington, D.C., and commented on the crops and livestock which he saw along the way. He saw President Taylor's funeral procession, the U.S. Capitol, and other sights. Brother Robert and his family sat for daguerreotypes for Andrew to take with him to Ireland. He lists other gifts for his return trip, such as a buffalo robe, books, and moccasins. On July 31, Andrew sailed from New York to return home. While on ship, coming and going, he saw ice bergs, worried about the fog, suffered bouts of seasickness, and enjoyed meeting his fellow passengers. Also included is the typescript of a letter from Robert Campbell, in London, August 12, 1867, to Andrew in County Tyrone, Ireland, in which Robert tells of his family's trip from Ireland to London.

Andrew Campbell lived in Ireland, his brother Hugh in Philadelphia. Their brother Robert (1804-1879) was involved in the Rocky Mountain fur trade and lived in St. Louis, although he was visiting East while Andrew was in the country.
